Barrie Carlisle

1935 – 2026

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Barrie Carlisle has passed away at the age of 91.

Although many of our newer members may not have had the pleasure of meeting him, Barrie was a true legend of the club, both in its early days and for many years thereafter.

He was a wonderfully patient and dedicated coach who taught hundreds of paddlers over the years, passing on his knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for the sport. He also competed in slalom himself, although never reaching the heights of one youngster he had coached. That youngster achieved the pinnacle, Premier bib number 1, but always reflected that it was Barrie who got him hooked on paddling.

Barrie had a lovely, gentle manner and was also a talented wordsmith. He delighted in writing humorous odes and poems recounting the many exploits and adventures of club paddlers, which brought laughter and pleasure to so many.

Many of us were fortunate enough to join him in celebrating his 90th birthday last year. It was a wonderful occasion, attended by a great many friends and former colleagues from the Post Office, where Barrie had worked for many years.

Barrie leaves behind a wonderful legacy and will be remembered with great affection by generations of paddlers who were lucky enough to know him and learn from him.

Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with his sons, Neil and Tony, both of whom also paddled at KKC, and with all his family and friends at this sad time.

Rest in peace, Barrie. Thank you for everything you gave to the club.
