This award recognises someone who has inspired others around them, whether that be through performance, adventure, adversity or another inspiring reason.

Voting is now open until Sunday 7th November where you can help us decide who will be the overall winner. The following candidates have been shortlisted as the top 3 in the ‘Inspirational Person’ category.

Meg Rudkin has been nominated for this award and you can vote for her via this page:  https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/news/2021/help-decide-who-wins-our-inspirational-person-award-voting-now-open

“Meg Rudkin is a 72 year old lady who has been an integral part of the Kingston Kayak Club in Hull for 30 years. She is involved in pretty much everything that the club does. Her good natured attitude and no nonsense approach means that she is loved and respected by everybody.

The club has organised a kayaking summer school for 30 years delivering holiday fun for inner city children in Hull. Meg has been integral in every one of these summer schools, being involved in the administration to organising coaching rota’s and delivering the sessions. These always involve our young and aspiring coaches and Megs role in their personal development is huge.

This year’s summer school will be the last for some time as the club’s premises are going to be redeveloped. However, it was one of the most challenging with many changes to make activity Covid safe. Meg adapted and changed all that was required so that the youngsters could have some much needed fun after a wretched 18 months.

Indications are Meg is looking to continue once we’re back on site again in 2023. Her personal bonfire parties are significant events in the club calendar. She welcomes up to 60 guests from both local canoe clubs to her large garden party. The club tackled an inner city drain clean up this year recovering 250 bags of rubbish and 60 shopping trolleys! Meg inevitably played an important and valuable role on the Saturday in a canoe and on the Sunday directing the on bank support.

This lady belies her age and is a true inspiration to everybody fortunate enough to meet her.”
